چکیده

BACKGROUND Behavioural and anatomical studies in schizophrenia have pointed to cerebellar involvement. AIMS To provide stereological estimations of volumes and cell number in the cerebella of people with schizophrenia and a control group using post-mortem material. METHOD Stereological methods were applied to cerebella taken from eight male patients with a DSM-III diagnosis of chronic schizophrenia with no neurological disorder (mean age 57.5 years) and ten male controls (mean age 56.2 years). The Cavalieri principle was used to provide estimates of volumes, the optical disector method to obtain estimates of the numerical density of Purkinje and granule cells, and a combination of the two to obtain estimates of total cell numbers in the cerebellum. The rotator method was applied to obtain estimates of mean Purkinje cell volume. RESULTS No global structural difference in major volumes, cell numbers of Purkinje cell volume was found between the groups. CONCLUSIONS The most frequently reported pathological finding in the cerebellum in schizophrenia is vermal atrophy, which was not found in this small group of heavily affected patients.

Stereological analysis of cornu ammonis in prenatally stressed rats: a heuristic neurodevelopmental model of schizophrenia

Objective(s):The hippocampus has been implicated in pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Prenatal stress is a contributing risk factor for a wide variety of neuropsychiatric diseases including schizophrenia. This study examined long-term effects of prenatal restraint stress on the stereological parameters in the Cornu Ammonis (CA) of adult male rats as an animal model of schizophrenia. Materials ...

Morphometric Analysis of Hemicerebellar Asymmetry with Central Vertigo Cases: A Stereological Study

We aimed to evaluate the relevant methods of stereology to estimate hemicerebellar asymmetry according to sex in both adult right handed vertigo cases and comparing with healthy cases. The study included 14 adult control subjects and 18 patients with vertigo. The volumes of the cerebellar hemispheres were determined by MRI using the point-counting approach of stereological methods. The mean (±S...

Preferences, Descriptions, and Response Latency to Fractal Images Among Individuals With and Without Schizophrenia

Background: Early simple, low-cost diagnosis of schizophrenia may accelerate the beginning of the treatment process. Here, utilizing the projective tools, including fractal images, are some of the diagnostic aids. Objectives: This study aimed to compare the preferences, descriptions, and response latency to fractal images between schizophrenic and healthy individuals. Materials & Methods: In ...

Decreased Oligodendrocyte and Neuron Number in Anterior Hippocampal Areas and the Entire Hippocampus in Schizophrenia: A Stereological Postmortem Study.

The hippocampus is involved in cognition as well as emotion, with deficits in both domains consistently described in schizophrenia. Moreover, the whole volumes of both the anterior and posterior region have been reported to be decreased in schizophrenia patients. While fewer oligodendrocyte numbers in the left and right cornu ammonis CA4 subregion of the posterior part of the hippocampus have b...
